Falcon Green Screened against Earth

This is a nicely green screened shot.  The Falcon seems to exist in the same space according to lighting and focus. There is definitely an art to good green screening.

Slave 1 Flies Past the Falcon

This is a smaller version of the Slave 1.  After I created this clip I realized that the two ships are roughly the same length (D'oh!!).  First I green screened the Falcon and made a clip with the star field. Then green screened Slave 1 and put the two in the timeline and presto!

Slave 1 Test Shot

This is a test shot of Slave 1 coming out of hyperspace.  Using iMovie I adjusted the speed of the clip in the beginning portion 8x and slowed down the remaining.

Slow Tracking Shot

I think this is a fairly successful tracking shot both in terms of steadiness but also with lighting and the foreboding music.  i wanted the Falcon to appear derelict.

Lighting for Green Screen

It goes without saying to properly light your subject.  For this shot I used a key light on the Falcon. And to evenly light the green screen.  Since I'm using a small model I've found that my Flip camera with a fish eye lens and long depth of field does a good job of making it look larger.

To bring out the detail in the Millennium Falcon model I used a black oil pastel and a course brush.  Applying pastel to the brush I worked it into the nooks and crannies and along the lines of the different panels and components.

This is the first attempt using the iMovie green screen.  As you can see it will require further tweaking.  Stay tuned for improved shots!

Millennium Falcon Weathering Process

1.  Wanting to experiment with the green screen feature in iMovie I purchased a Millennium Falcon model kit and it was clear that I would have to weather the hull to bring it to "piece of junk" shape and generally make it look less like a plastic model and more like a vessel with a metal hull.
